In the following article we will discuss the benefits of shipping FCL (Full Container Load)

FCL : Secure Shipping

Container shipping is a secure way of transporting your cargo. As well as protection from the elements, a FCL can provide extra reassurance that your consignment is safe. All containers have a secure seal, identified by a unique number, which effectively locks the container at time of loading. The seal number is then added to your shipping documentation, for checking upon arrival. (If for any reason, Customs select the container for examination, you will be notified and the container resealed)

If shipping, for example , delicate machinery, shipping via container will it automatically reduce the cost of packing, provided the cargo is secured correctly, the container acts as a safe environment.

FCL : Cost effective/Affordable

Ocean freight rates, are calculated basis the container size. (20ft /40ft /40 ft high cube) , compared to LCL cargo which is calculated by weight/cube. Comparatively FCL is a cheaper way of shipping provided you have the volume of cargo. If the container is loaded correctly, you can maximize the saving. For example, although more labour intensive, at loading/unloading point, if you were to load an 20 ft container with ctns, as opposed to pallets, stc ctns, you would lower your freight cost per cbm, due to loading more cartons. This saving also applies to the landing charges and deliver/collection. It is also interesting to note that although the freight for 20 ft /40 ft/ 40 ft hq ,differs per size, the landing/delivery charges can be similar depending on the carrier.

Ease of Loading/unloading

Containers can be loaded /unloaded:

From the ground (special haulage vehicle needed to lower to the ground) – ideal for vehicles.

From a loading bay, (fork lift truck/pump truck can speed up the process)

With a ramp, (fork lift truck/pump truck speeds up the process

By hand. (can be labour intensive)

Depending on the cargo, loading options may vary. If loading small cartons (ctns) many choose to load them on pallets first. Larger ctns may be loaded unloaded by hand depending on the weight.

Simplistic costing

As freight rates , landing charges and collection delivery charges are calculated basis 20ft,40ft or 40 ft high cube , it is easy to calculate total cost for shipments.
Storage Possibilities

When shipping FCL you have various storage options. If a container needs to be stored short/long term various options are available.(charges vary per carrier)For example. You may chose to leave the container on quay until ready for delivery. You may chose to have the container delivered to a warehouse for unloading and storage, or If the product is to be called item , by item , you may chose to leave the container at your premises(on the ground) , until the container is empty. This is a good option if you do not have a warehouse, but need to access your cargo at short notice. The container can be used as a secure storage area ( charges vary per carrier)

Readily available

It was estimated in 2009 that there was more than 17 million containers in the global fleet!!

————————————————————————–
